This is our 2nd clutch of axolotl babies with a 3rd clutch still in there eggs. The 2nd clutch hatched on the 20th February and are very nearly ready to go - There hind legs are slowly coming in and there almost 2 inches in length.Once they're established they will need new homes. They will be established when they have fully grown hind legs & are at least 3 inches long. They require a tank which is long rather than tall with plenty of hiding spacesThey usually live alone as they can be quite aggressive but ours are bonded now so live quite happily together - Which can happen too.The great thing with axolotls is if there well looked after (and they don't require much care) they can live for 10+ years. Also if they have a tank mate they may fight but they can regenerate there limbs!Tank prep :-We keep ours without sand/gravel because they are gannets and will eat it which in return could cause a harmful blockage. We have hiding places and plants (the plants are essential for the laying of there spawn)And a filter - No need for a heater & they can even live in pondsFood :- they start on frozen blood worm when you get them home then move on to pellets and the occasional live shrimp which helps maintain a clean tank whilst being food to catch too

FAQs

Why is it illegal to own an axolotl? ›

In three states and the District of Columbia, it is illegal to own an axolotl. California and Maine both make axolotls illegal because they are considered “detrimental animals” that pose a threat to native salamander species in the states.

Are axolotls reptiles or amphibians? ›

The axolotl (pronounced ACK-suh-LAH-tuhl), also known as the Mexican walking fish, is an amphibian that's native to the waters near Mexico City.

Can you buy a real life axolotl? ›

As many have noticed, axolotls are illegal to own as pets in some US states and Canadian provinces, as well as other parts of the world. In the United States, axolotls are illegal to own in California, Maine, New Jersey, and D.C., while a permit is required in New Mexico and Hawaii.

How an axolotl taught me there's nothing wrong with showing a little vulnerability? ›

I became more comfortable with vulnerability because my axolotl helped me realize exactly what I have to lose. I have a wonderful network of friends, a loving family, and a healthy body and mind — all of which deserve attention, care and empathy.

Why can't we touch axolotls? ›

Axolotls are best appreciated as observational pets, thriving in environments where they are left undisturbed. Their sensitive skin and crucial slime coat mean that touching them should be avoided whenever possible.

Do axolotls bite? ›

They tend to swallow their food with a mouthful of water, sending it straight into their stomach instead of taking big chunks. Axolotls are capable of biting food items and giving any neighboring tank fellows a nip if they get too close.

How big of a tank does an axolotl need? ›

An Axolotl tank should be at least 10 gallons so they can survive, but we recommend opting for a 20 or 30-gallon tank if you have the room. Axolotls produce a lot of waste, so it is easy for ammonia and nitrate levels to get out of control if you keep them in a smaller tank.

How long is an axolotl's lifespan? ›

They are carnivorous and will feed on a range of prey including, insects, worms, mollusks, fish and arthropods. Lifespan: In the wild, axolotls generally live 5-6 years but can reach 15 years in captivity. Breeding: Axolotls reach reproductive maturity after their first year of life.

Are axolotls good pets? ›

Axolotls can make good pets for someone looking to observe rather than interact with a pet. They will engage with humans who come by their tank and are fun to watch in their habitat. They are easy to care for, making them a good pet for someone looking for a lower-responsibility pet.

Why should I not get an axolotl? ›

“They can be great pets, but they aren't great pets for everyone – and children need to know that they can't handle an axolotl as they're very delicate and they can get injured. They also need a very quiet home with a lot of space – children aren't known to be very quiet”, Dr Beattie correctly says.

Why is everyone obsessed with axolotls? ›

Take one look at an axolotl, and it's easy to see why it's so popular. With their wide eyes, upturned mouths and pastel pink coloring, axolotls look cheerful and vaguely Muppet-like. They've skyrocketed in pop culture fame, in part thanks to the addition of axolotls to the video game Minecraft in 2021.

How do I know if my axolotl is unhappy? ›

You can gauge whether an axolotl is stressed when it is not eating and when its gills are forward-curled. The best way to avoid this is by fitting a spray bar or flow-spreading outlet.

How expensive is an axolotl? ›

An axolotl costs between $30 – $75 for a basic but healthy one. If you're looking for something more exotic like a piebald axolotl variation, it will cost about $100. Some rare specimens can cost a few hundred, but these are generally extremely unique variations that only serious collectors tend to purchase.

What can axolotls do that humans can t? ›

Many animals have the power of regeneration

A prime example is the axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum), a species of aquatic salamander. Unlike humans, it has the “superpower” of regenerating its limbs, spinal cord, heart, and other organs.

Why are axolotls sold as pets? ›

Docile and Calm Nature. Axolotls have a calm and docile nature, making them suitable pets for people of all ages. They are not aggressive and will generally keep to themselves.

Are axolotls OK on their own? ›

In the wild, axolotls are solitary animals, and so are happy being kept on their own. If multiple axolotls are to be kept together, enough space should be given for each one to have its own area away from others. Axolotls are messy animals, and sensitive to poor water quality.
