Whether you’re after an exciting new 4X game for some classic empire building, or a good old-fashioned RTS, 2022 has something for everyone.
It’s worth mentioning that all these games are available exclusively on PC at the moment, so if you’re interested in any console ports, we’ve got bad news. For the longest time, PC has been the platform of choice for strategy fans, it’s a genre that simply suits mouse and keyboard better than a controller.
The Best New PC Strategy Games of 2022
Within this list, you won’t find any strategy games which have been announced but don’t have a release date/window currently, ruling out big ones like Frostpunk 2. We’ve focused on titles we’ve already seen or are still to come, so if you’re looking for something new, these are the best PC strategy games in 2022 right now.
Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters
We’re certainly not lacking for Warhammer 40K adaptations these last few years. Between Chaosbane, Necromunda: Hired Gun, Battle Sister, Battlesector, Vermintide 2, and so many more, you’d be forgiven for missing Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters in this crowded market. That said, if you’re a turn-based strategy fan and Battlesector didn’t quite cut it, this adaptation could be the one for you.
Commanding a squad of Grey Knights, a Space Marine chapter tasked with combating daemonic forces, this recent game sees us fighting the forces of Nurgle, who’re attempting to unleash a deadly plague. Not only is Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters fast-paced, it’s also unforgiving, intense, and possibly one of the best Warhammer adaptations in recent times. Having launched back in May, series fans would do well to take a closer look.

Old World
If you’re searching for a new historical experience, Mohawk Games has you covered with Old World. Presenting a new 4X strategy game, you’ll build an empire across several generations, creating new cities, conquering existing ones, and ultimately determining your own destiny. Unlike other games, we’re not playing God with this world, our leader is as mortal as the rest of us, so succession plays a key role in securing your future.
While we’re still going through various ages of history, Old World doesn’t try to encapsulate everything at the rapid pace Civilization does, taking a gentler approach. You’ll need patience when handling its complexities but if you’re willing to sink that time in, there’s a rewarding experience to be found in Old World.
Dune: Spice Wars
Given last year’s film adaptation, Shiro Games chose a fitting time to launch Dune: Spice Wars, making this the second 4X game on this list. Set in Frank Herbert’s Dune universe, this takes us back to Arrakis, where we’ll be fighting for supremacy over the desert planet. We’ve currently got four factions to pick between: House Atreides, The Smugglers, the Fremen, and the infamous House Harkonnen.
There’s a strong focus on resource management, allowing you to upgrade your main base, towns, and even use Spice during diplomacy. Just be aware that if you do take the leap, Dune: Spice Wars is currently in early access, the full game isn’t launching until 2023. Expect to see a full campaign, multiplayer, and a brand-new faction when it does but as it stands, Dune: Spice Wars is a promising RTS.

Total War: Warhammer III
It’s been a long ride for the Total War: Warhammer series. Developed by Creative Assembly, also known for Halo Wars 2 and Alien Isolation, Warhammer III marks the conclusion to this acclaimed RTS trilogy. Taking us to the Realm of Chaos, this arrived back in February with seven launch factions, letting you play between followers of four Chaos Gods, the Daemons of Chaos, alongside the Empire of Grand Cathay and Tsardom of Kislev.
There’s a lot here, which might sound intimidating for newcomers but thanks to new modes and additional features, Total War: Warhammer III is arguably the best entry yet. However, if you’ve already gone through Warhammer III, then fear not. Creative Assembly’s slowly releasing a slate of new DLC, including this month’s Champions of Chaos pack, so there’s plenty more yet to come.
Company of Heroes 3
I can’t imagine there’s many RTS fans who haven’t heard of Relic Entertainment’s legendary Company of Heroes series. First arriving in 2006, it launched to critical acclaim, and we’ve not seen a new entry in over nine years. Fans have been waiting a long time, Relic developed Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III and Age of Empires IV in between, but Company of Heroes 3 is nearly here at long last.
Set in World War 2 but moving away from the Eastern Front, Company of Heroes 3 opts for a Mediterranean setting instead. Placing us in charge of the Allied Forces, we’ll be invading Italy before taking on Axis forces across North Africa, and there’s a heavier emphasis on destructible environments. Easily one of the most anticipated RTS games in 2022, that’s expected to launch on November 17, 2022.
